KLMBH #193 - Ulu Yam Scenic report

by mynameiskoko » Fri Oct 15, 2010 4:40 pm

Yes, I did the scenic. Lets get that out of the way now. Ahem..

Woke up groggy that morning, didn’t get a good nights sleep. So even though I ticked “long ride” on the registration form, I changed my mind when we were starting out to do the scenic instead since I didn’t feel like torturing myself on the long ride that day. Hei, can’t blame me for thinking like that since two dogs is in the list of hares!!

It was quite an enjoyable ride I might say. I stayed at the back of the pack at the start of the ride, and got caught in the traffic jam at the first climb. I still remember this section well, since Winston and I spend a lot of time here transporting 5 bikes between the two of us on the Nov 2009 bash. Didn’t seem too difficult now though as compared to that time.

After getting past all the pushing, it was a nice and easy ride through sections that I recognize from a number of rides. Its quite easy to go fast now since the bulk of the pack has zoomed off in front of me. Met the usual suspects, stopped to chat a lot of times, and taking everything very easy since I know I only had about 12km to do.

Finally arrived at the split for long and short, again stopped for quite some time to chit chat and wait for a friend. Quite a pleasant day for a ride actually, and after taking off into the scenic route I started to regret not going for the long that day. Ah well, I can always come again another day to torture myself if I wanted to.

After a while of riding, we finally ran out of paper. Backtracking we actually found that it was actually at a check that is not broken yet! Hmm.. this is a rare occurrence to me being in the middle pack most of the time riding a bash so an unbroken check is not something I see often. We totally missed the check marker since we were not expecting one.

A rider came from one of the branches heading uphill, so there were 3 of us to solve the check. I proceeded to backcheck and didn’t have to go far before hearing on! on! called. So off we go again, riding a pleasant trail back to the car.

I must say, that must have been the fastest 12km scenic bash that I’ve ever done. I remember checking the odometer when reaching the main road thinking that we might have skipped some sections since it felt too short. Nice scenery and good weather must have made the time and distance seem to fly by quickly.

Good job to the hares, I’ll be sure to take this route again when I want a nice easy ride!

KLMBH #193 - Ulu Yam Long Ride Report

by patawi » Mon Oct 11, 2010 8:32 pm

I am not the scribe and this is not a ride report, it’s simply commentary. This bash was a cumulative effort by a number of hares, but buried in that crowd was a name that should strike terror in the average hasher - the legendary (perhaps even infamous?) Scott Roberts. Yet the end result was rather civilized, at least by the standards of anything set in the Ulu Yam area. Consider if you will the following elements of this bash:

- the checks were solve-able within a few minutes by riders with average levels of skill and persistence

- not every one was at the top of the biggest hill they could find

- check distances were typically less than the maximum range of a 30-06 rifle

- river crossings did not require a snorkel or safety harness

- total ascent for the ride was less than the height of Malaysia’s tallest mountain.

Taken by themselves, each are simply anomalies. But together, they gave those of us riding at the front the notion that there could be only 2 rational explanations:

1) The other hares had used heavy duty pharmaceuticals to control Scott’s killer urges

2) Scott has been abducted by aliens and a kinder, gentler pod-person replacement substituted

And furthermore, is it better to resolve what has happened to the real Scott or just leave well enough alone? My personal opinion is that we should at least resolve whether the answer is 1) or 2), because if it’s 1) then the right thing to do would be to take a collection to buy more drugs to continue the program.

by mynameiskoko » Mon Oct 04, 2010 11:43 am

Venue: Ulu Yam Baru

Date: Sunday, 10 October 2010
Important times: As usual, briefing will be at 9.15am, bash start at 9.30am.

Parking: 100m east along the Genting Road, and park on the grass on the left (not the Lucky Like Restoran). We will start on this road, this will avoid any major road crossing at busy intersections.

Directions:
1. Proceed on Jalan Kuching towards Rawang and Ipoh
2. Exit up the ramp towards Kuantan and Batu Caves
3. At the “big” round-about at the top of the ramp (traffic lights now preventing mass pandemonium), merge into the traffic flow and exit the round-about at 3 O’Clock towards Kuantan (stay well left ready to exit… it’s fun)

4. 100-meters later take a small slip road to the left and proceed over several small speed bumps

5. 75-meters later, when the road bends to the left, go straight

6. About 200-meters after this, and a couple of more speed bumps, you hit a T-junction. Turn left and proceed to the traffic light 250-meters later. There will be a mosque on your right
7. Proceed straight through a number traffic lights. When you pass a Petronas station, continue 150-meters further and turn right. This will be approx 4km from the Mosque intersection and it will be sign-posted “Ulu Yam Baru” (there’s also a Rapid-KL Bus Depot on your right).
8. Go up this hill, then descend and pass the scenic view of Batu Dam. Proceed on this road for 22km and turn left at the T-Junction
9. Approx 1km later, and in the heart of Ulu Yam Baru township, turn right (sign-posted Genting Highlands).
10. Proceed for another approx 2km and at the 4-way intersection, the Lucky Like Restoran will be on the left hand side of the road. Turn right (not left) at this intersection towards Genting, you will find KLMBH cars parked on the left of the road, 100m east of the intersection.

PARKING: the entrance is 100m along the road to Genting, across the intersection from the Lucky Like Restoran (you will see the cars on the grass). For those with a GPS, the coordinates are: N3°26’48.90” E101°40’2.15”
